Kamayut Media editor sentenced to five more years in prison

The editor and co-founder of Kamayut Media, Hanthar Nyein, was sentenced to a further five years in prison at Insein Prison Court on 26 December.

He was sentenced under Section 33 (a) of the Electronic Transactions Law. Previously, on 21 March 2022 he was sentenced to two years in prison with hard labour under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code. This means that Hanthar Nyein will now have to serve 7 years in prison.

One of his friends said on social media: "As I expected, he has been sentenced to five years in prison under Section 33 (a) of the Electronic Transactions Law.”

On 9 March 2021, junta soldiers raided the office of Kamayut Media in Yangon and arrested Hanthar Nyein and the editor-in-chief, Nathan Maung.

Nathan Maung, an American citizen, was released and deported on 14 June 2021 after being detained in Insein Prison for more than three months.

According to Reporters Without Borders, more than 130 journalists have been arrested since the coup, and more than 60 were still imprisoned at the time of reporting
