Myanmar junta artillery kills 10 Maungdaw villagers and injures 27

Junta troops killed 10 villagers, including children and injured a further 27 when they fired artillery into Gyate Chaung Village in Rakhine State’s Maungdaw Township at about midday on 16 November.

Junta soldiers from Kyein Chaung checkpoint (24) and the Border Guard Unit (7) from Maungdaw Township fired three artillery shells into the village.

According to residents quoted in local media, there had been no fighting between resistance forces and junta troops in the area before the village was shelled.

A resident of Gyate Chaung Village said: "At about midday they started shooting at our village. Shells landed on the houses, killing some and injuring others. They are killing us on purpose using heavy artillery.”

Also in Rakhine State earlier on the same day, 16 November, at around 8:00 a.m. junta Infantry Battalion (539) based in Kan Zauk Town, in Kyauktaw Township fired heavy artillery into Chaung Tu village in Kyauktaw township, killing four villagers and injuring two others.

The injured from both incidents have been taken to local hospitals for treatment.

In the two weeks till 16 November, more than 25 people have been killed and more than 40 have been injured by junta artillery fire in Rakhine State.
