Myanmar protestors launch ‘silent strike’ against junta

People in many cities and townships of Myanmar are conducting a "silent strike" today to show public unity against the military junta.

Photos of roads and markets without people and the closure of businesses have gone viral online 24 March with comments claiming success with the stay-at-home protest.

The campaign for a "silent strike" was launched on social media a few days ago since the military cut mobile phone internet access on 15 March, an action which coincided with the postponement of a court hearing for former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

According to the figures of Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) up to 23 March, 275 civilians have been killed in incidents related to the military coup. Some political activists were arrested and killed after the night raids on their residences, according to reports.
