NLD demands release of political prisoners including Suu Kyi on 3rd anniversary of general election

On the third anniversary of the 2020 general election, the National League for Democracy (NLD) called on the Myanmar junta to release the detained State Counselor and NLD chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners.

The general election took place on November 8, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Human Rights Documentation Team of the National League for Democracy (HRDT-NLD) reported that as of 1 November 2023, the military junta had arrested 1,290 NLD members, including 71 MPs, and that 101 members, including three MPs, had died in detention.

The junta raided NLD offices 160 times across the country and sealed off the homes of 407 NLD members, including 182 NLD MPs.

Since the coup, junta troops burned down 61,871 houses in 1,498 separate incidents. The junta's offensives against civilian communities, airstrikes on civilians, and arrests and torture have resulted in the deaths of 4,095 civilians, according to the figures compiled by HRDT-NLD.

The NLD says that it would cooperate with ethnic revolutionary organizations (EROs), partner organizations and the public to build a federal democratic union.
