NLD report reveals 22 Myanmar junta massacres over two years, killing 590 civilians

The Central Working Committee of the National League for Democracy (NLD) reported that following the seizure of state power, the Military Council carried out 22 large-scale massacres resulting in the death of 590 civilians.

From 9 September 2021 to 9 October 2023, NLD documented 22 instances of mass killings by the Military Council across Myanmar, it says in a 11 October press release.

In the statement, it was reported that a total of 590 civilians lost their lives in the 22 documented cases of mass killing. The most significant loss of life in a single incident took place on 11 April this year, when the Military Council conducted an aerial bombardment on Pazigyi Village in Kanbalu Township, Sagaing Region, resulting in the tragic deaths of 168 civilians.

The majority of the mass massacres were concentrated in the Sagaing Region, with additional incidents occurring in the Magway Region, Bago Region, Karenni State, Mon State, Kachin State, and Rakhine State.

The initial incident of mass killing took place on 9 September 2021, resulting in the tragic death of 20 residents in Myin Thar Village, Gangaw Township, Magway Region.

According to a statement from the National Unity Government (NUG), the most recent incident took place on 9 October, 2023. During this event, the Munglai Hkyet Internally Displaced Camp, located near Laiza Town in the Kachin State, was targeted by the Military Council. Tragically, the attack resulted in the loss of 29 civilian lives.

According to the statement, the NLD is committed to seeking accountability and punishment for the actions of the junta, which it considers acts of terrorism. The NLD also aims to achieve justice for the victims affected by inhumane acts.

Furthermore, the NLD urges the international community, including the United Nations Security Council, to offer more efficient assistance in order to expedite the process of restoring justice for the people of Myanmar.
