Power outage in Ayeyarwady Region closes some businesses

In townships in Ayeyarwady Region, power blackouts lasting for more than 14 hours a day have forced some businesses relying on the government power supply to shut down.

Local residents said power outages usually occur from 4:00 am to 10:00 pm daily and electricity is being distributed in rotation for a few hours during the day.

“It is not possible to use refrigerators and electric cooking utensils,” a resident in Nyaungdon Township told Mizzima.

"The power cuts that started in December are getting worse now. In December, we were told that the power supply would be reduced because the power lines would be repaired,” said the resident.

A shopkeeper who provides computer typing services in Pathein Township in Ayeyarwady said, “Now we are back to 2008. Due to the military coup, a power outage happens the entire day. Oil prices are so high that it is not convenient to work with generators. Computer typing and copying shops open in the evening to collect customers' orders and work at night.”

Another resident said that now some people are relying on solar energy.
