The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • On 31 July, the NUG Ministry of Finance, Planning and Investment announced that the eight foreign companies with illegal investments under the military junta were to stop operating without any exception.
  • According to the right of self-defence, the public has been taking part in a People’s Defensive War. Reportedly, 87 members of the junta armed forces died and 10 others were injured on Sunday.
  • In Canberra in Australia, there will be an opening ceremony for the NUG representative's office on 3 and 6 August.

Revolutionary Activities

  • To support Sagaing Region with heavy battles against the junta armed forces, Phase (1) of the ‘Dancing with Ladies’ project hoped to earn 15,000 lakh MMK. In reality, they got much more than expected.
  • On Sunday, a spokesperson of the Japanese government confirmed that a Japanese citizen had been arrested in Myanmar and called for his release as soon as possible.
  • In Sagaing Town, the junta army arrested a photographer, U Aye Kyaw, on Saturday morning and discarded his dead body in the evening.
  • On Monday, the Kalay General Strike protested against the military dictatorship.
  • On the border of Ayadaw and Myinmu, the junta helicopters flew over and fired on Latpangyin Village and Thahtegone Village, at 11:40 a.m. on Monday.
  • In Myinmu Township, the junta army shot at Latpangyin Village from four helicopters on Monday morning. Then junta soldiers raided the village.
  • In Ye-U Township, the junta army set fire to Tintainyan Village for four days from 28 to 31 July. Reportedly, four rice mills, over 200 shops and over 100 houses were burnt down.
  • According to local people, junta soldiers took away things from the buildings before setting the fires.
  • On the 509th day of protest, a combined rally of villagers from Salingyi and Yinmabin marched against the military dictatorship.
  • In Muse in Shan State, there was a bomb explosion at about 11:11 a.m. on Monday. Reportedly, a policeman and two junta soldiers fell to the ground.
  • On Monday, Mandalay Monks’ Union led an anti-junta movement, reciting parittas.
  • In Thazi Township, there was a battle near Myetkhain Village as the junta armed forces raided the weapon production station of local PDFs. Reportedly, 12 junta soldiers died and the PDF members had to abandon their camp.
  • In Madayar Township, local PDFs conducted bomb attacks with drones on the junta army stationed in Yelegyun Village at about 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. Reportedly, about five junta soldiers died.
  • In Pulaw Township of Tanintharyi Region, a rally of local people and PDF members conducted a motorbike strike against the military dictatorship on Monday.
  • In Dawei, the Rosy Women marched against the military dictatorship on Monday morning.
  • In Kanbauk, the Zawtika gas pipeline owned by Thailand's PTTEP was allegedly blown up at about 3:00 am on Monday.
  • In Magwe Town all the sellers banged pots and pans at the market at 10:37 a.m. on Sunday. Consequently, the military junta did not allow them to sell things.
  • In a village in Myaing Township, local people conducted a pledge event and protested against the military dictatorship on Sunday. After that, they donated 32 pairs of earrings, 4 rings and nearly 450,000 MMK to a local PDF and a public school.
  • In Kyaw, the Yaw Defence Force (YDF) raided the junta's Patoelone gas power plant and arrested the staff including officers.

Ethnic Armed Organisations

  • According to Karenni National Progressive Party, there were battles in Karenni State, including 157 air strikes by the junta army, since the coup. Reportedly, a total of 293 people lost their lives.
  • The Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS) said that they had a policy meeting to discuss the current politics.

The Military Council

  • According to the junta Health Minister, there were 10,766 cases of dengue fever in Myanmar from 1 January to 16 July 2022, and up to 43 patients died. He also called for systematic prevention measures, including anti-mosquito campaigns.
  • The junta propaganda media mentioned that 3,156 CDM teachers and 231 members of various organizations including the PDF returned to the military junta.
  • The military junta announced that the Vice-President during the tenure of the NLD government could not join the National Security Meeting the previous day due to health reasons.
  • In his national speech on MRTV, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said that they had been making an effort to fulfill three objectives to improve the country's economy and that it would improve within six months.
  • The junta leader stated that they would carry out the priorities of the ASEAN five-point consensus in accordance with ASEAN policy.
  • Pretending not to know about thousands of deaths due to the junta army, the junta leader expressed his sorrow for the loss of some junta pillars.
  • On Monday morning, the junta leader said on state media that his recent trip to Russia for the consecration of the Shwezigon Pagoda replica had been a national trip for friendship. 

Summary on 2 August

  • The military junta extended the state of emergency period for six more months. Though they had a coup 18 months ago they still cannot run a proper administration. On the other hand, the junta leader said that they could rule the country very well and the economy would boom in the next six months. In reality, Myanmar has faced the worst situation ever since the military coup and it has become the poorest country in the region. As for the public, they have suffered various hardships.
  • The military junta has been treating people who work for the media as their enemies. They arrest and kill them wherever they find them. They caught a photographer at his house in Sagaing and killed him on the road. They also arrested a Japanese documentary maker and sent him to interrogation. In other words, they have been openly violating human rights including freedom of expression.
  • In terms of international diplomacy, the NUG has been getting the better of the military junta. It has been building direct relationships with international governments by opening representative offices, that are similar to embassies, in one country after another.
