The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • There was a meeting of the NUG on Tuesday and the NUG Acting President called for agreement on political pledges that will guarantee the future’s federal union.
  • According to a joint statement by the NUG Ministry of Education and the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) on Tuesday, the Ministry will empower and support identification, research, implementation and regional policies related to education systems based on mother languages to prepare for the future.
  • Myanmar Nway Oo University (MNOU) announced that it would accept registrations for their formal courses from 20 February to 3 March.
  • In Myaung Township in Sagaing Region, there was an educational funfair along with a prize giving ceremony at an NUG-run school.
  • At 1:00 pm on Saturday, there was an online meeting between the Education Committee under the Committee Representing the Pyitaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the Education Boards under the Committee Representing the Yangon Regional Hluttaw.
  • Regarding a case involving murders among members of the People’s Security and Defence Army (PSDA) based in Muse in Shan North, the NUG sentenced the perpetrators to 20 years in prison and disbanded the PSDA.

Revolutionary Activities

  • On Monday, the European Union officially announced that it had put economic sanctions on nine more individuals, including top army officers, the Yangon Regional Economics Minister, and seven companies.
  • In Sagaing Region, a combined rally of local villages from Salingyi and Yinmabin marched against the military dictatorship on Tuesday, holding signs saying: ‘No need to discuss for bloody debt’.
  • In Yinmabin North, there was a rally against the military dictatorship on Tuesday morning.
  • In Pale Township, basic education students led a protest against the military dictatorship on Tuesday.
  • In Kantbalu Township, the junta army and Pyu Saw Htee Militia set fire to Chaunggya Village for the third time at about 8:00 am on Tuesday.
  • In Minkin Township, local PDFs attacked the junta army and Pyu Saw Htee militia stationed in Patoelone Village for three days. Reportedly, three junta members died and ten others were injured.
  • In Wetlet Township, the Basic Education Students’ Union and local people marched for the end of the military dictatorship, holding signs saying: ‘The election is not democracy’ and ‘Your ballot box is full of the public’s blood’.
  • In Bahan Township in Yangon Region, there was a grenade attack on the junta administration office in Boseinman Ward on Monday night.
  • In Tontay Township, an individual protester named Moedy was arrested, beaten and killed by the junta army on 12 February.
  • In Nyaunglebin Township in Bago Region, there was a battle between the junta army and local PDFs at 5:30 am on Tuesday. Reportedly, 10 junta soldiers died. Afterwards, the junta army wildly fired mortars at local villages, even though there was no fighting in the area. As a result, three people lost their lives.
  • In Myaing Township in Magwe Region, a combined rally of local people and the Basic Education General Strike Committee marched for the downfall of the military dictatorship and raised anti-junta banners.
  • In Thayet Township, PDFs attacked Hsinkaw Police Station with 40mm launchers at about 6:00 am on Monday. They also conducted a mine attack on the supporting troop. Reportedly, eight junta members died.
  • In Ngazun Township in Mandalay Region, there was an attack on the junta army on patrol on Monday night. Reportedly, four junta soldiers, including a captain, died.
  • In Htandabin Township in Bago Region, PDFs conducted a guerrilla attack on the junta police as they were on their way to arrest a woman in Nat Village at about 4:00 pm on Monday. Reportedly, five junta policemen died.
  • In Longlone Township in Tanintharyi Region, the Dawei District Democratic Committee conducted an anti-junta public talk on Tuesday.
  • In Tatgone Township in Naypyitaw, the junta army arrested Thein Naing Win and Chatgyi, members of Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), accusing them of being PDF members, on 18 February.
  • On the border of Myanmar and Thailand, the junta armed forces arrested 16 local people from Kamaukgyi Township on 14 and 15 February. So far, they have not been contactable.
  • Muse People’s Security and Defence Army was abolished and reformed as Tactic of Muse.
  • In Moemaik Township in Shan East, PDFs attacked the junta armed forces at about 8:00 am on Monday.

Ethnic Armed Organisations

  • In the areas under the control of the Karen National Union (KNU), 337 junta soldiers died in battles in January. In the area under the KNU Brigade (5), 28 junta soldiers died in the first 15 days of February.
  • In Thaton Township in Mon State, a combined force of the KNLA conducted a mine attack on a military convoy on the Yangon-Mawlamyein Road on Sunday night. Reportedly, seven junta soldiers died, four others were injured and three army trucks were damaged.
  • In Kyaukme Township in Shan North, there was a battle between the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the junta army at about 7:30 am on Monday. Reportedly, 15 junta soldiers died and weapons were confiscated.
  • In Thantlang Township in Chin State, two soldiers from the junta army Ka-La-Ya (269) defected to CDF Hakha, together with two guns, over 600 bullets and seven bombs. Reportedly, they were each awarded 3,000,000 MMK and sent to safe places.
  • In Kanpetlet Township, there was an event in memory of the 9 CDF members who had lost lives in the fight against the military dictatorship.
  • According to the statement by Chin National Organisation- CNO/CNDF on 12 February, it will start taking action against non-CDM staff in the areas under its control, so non-CDM staff members are to leave the areas before the end of February.

The Military Council

  • On Monday, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing awarded prestigious titles to the former Prime Minister of Japan and the Chair of the Japan-Myanmar Friendship Association in Naypyitaw.
  • According to the junta Union Election Commission, it has been looking into the use of electronic voting machines in the coming elections.
  • The junta Ministry of Trade and Commerce issued a directive containing the guidelines for the import of vehicles including electric ones.
  • The military junta announced that five Nigerian people and six Myanmar people had been caught withdrawing nearly 1,400 lakh MMK from KBZ Bank Accounts owned by two women they were swindling.
  • According to the junta’s Myanmar National Airline, it will run a direct flight service between Mandalay and Chiang Mai every Thursday starting from 2 March.
  • On Monday, Myanmar hosted the 24th drug control meeting between Thailand and Myanmar at the Park Royal Hotel in Yangon.
  • According to the junta propaganda media on Monday night, U Htin Kyaw, the president during the tenure of the NLD government, received prestigious titles from the military junta on behalf of his father and father-in-law.
  • On 17 February, the military junta sentenced U Phyo Min Thein, the former Chief Minister of Yangon Region, to a fine of 100,000 MMK for abuse of power during the election.
  • On Monday, there was a meeting between the team led by the Chairman of the USDP and the Russian Ambassador to Myanmar at the USDP Headquarters in Naypyitaw. Reportedly, they discussed promoting cooperation between the two parties.
  • In a meeting with party members in Mandalay Region on Sunday, U Thaung Aye, the Secretary of the military’s proxy party, the USDP, claimed that it would try to become the smart party, the reliable party for the public.

Summary on 22 February

  • The EU continues to sanction the associates of the military junta. They might take more serious action in the near future.
  • To divide unity, the military junta has been abusing prestigious titles. According to the junta propaganda media, the former President of the NLD Government received such titles on behalf of his family members.
