Sri Lankan 'white elephant' Chinese tower to open

Built for an estimated $113 million, the communications Lotus Tower in Sri Lanka, standing at 350-meter (1,155 feet), will finally open this week. Chief executive Prasad Samarasinghe states, "Anywhere in the world, this type of building is an icon of the country." Plagued by corruption claims since construction began in 2012 under former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, the company hopes to rent out office and shop space, including a revolving restaurant just below the observation deck offering views of the capital and the Indian Ocean.
