UN expert urges Japan to sanction Myanmar military

Thomas Andrews, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, calls on Japan to join other G7 countries by imposing economic sanctions on the military junta, just as it has done in response to the crisis in Ukraine.

"I urge Prime Minister [Fumio] Kishida to ensure that the Myanmar crisis is on the G7 agenda and that a strong, unified message and a commitment to action emerges from that summit," Andrews told reporters at a press conference in Tokyo. G7 leaders will meet in Hiroshima next month.
