Yangon resistance group urges political parties not to participate in 2023 Myanmar elections

The Special Task Agency of Burma (STA), a Yangon-based resistance group, urged political parties to strongly oppose the electoral processes and procedures implemented by the Military Council.

The request was made in a statement released by STA on 5 October.

The statement said that the Military Council is attempting to hold general elections in 2023 against the will of the people in Myanmar, so political parties must make strong efforts to prevent the 2023 election.

It also told political parties not to register with the Union Elections Commission (UEC) for the 2023 election and warned that any that do so will have to face consequences.

A STA representative said to Mizzima: “We have nothing to add to the statement. This statement says everything that we want to say about the upcoming Junta’s elections. We will take action against political parties who participate in the Junta’s 2023 elections.”

The junta has said that it intends to hold elections in August 2023 under a proportional representation system.

Under a proportional representation system each party receives a number of parliamentarians proportional to its share of the entire vote, though observers claim that there is no chance that the junta will carry out elections that are in any way free or fair.

The planned elections have already been internationally derided and accused of being a junta sham that they will carry out in an effort to legitimise their regime.
