A competition about Aung San Suu Kyi's biography and a speech contest were held at Seiktinekya Tea Shop on Thanthuma Road in South Okkalapa Township, Yangon, yesterday to mark the 71st birthday of the National League for Democracy (NLD) chairperson Suu Kyi.
NLD patron Tin Oo, NLD MPs from 14 townships in East Yangon District, and more than 100 NLD members and the famous comedian Zarganar (aka) Maung Thura attended the event.
Tin Oo said: “We cannot call Daw Aung San Suu Kyi a president, but she is in the position of authority. This is a small event, but it is the beginning of the campaign for the 2020 [election]. If a leader lacks quality, the citizens need to admonish the leader.”
He added that NLD will work for national reconciliation and peace.
Nay Kyaw, the chairman of the organizing committee of the event, said: “We held the event in order that young people can copy what Daw Suu did, what she said and what she is doing. And then they may be able to conduct researche about what they should do in the future.”
There were 15 contestants. The prize money was Kyat 50,000 for the first prize; Kyat 40,000 for the second prize, Kyat 30,000 for the third prize, and Kyat 20,000 for consolation prizes. Portraits of Aung San Suu Kyi were also given to the prize winners.
