Aung San Suu Kyi wins seat in House of Representatives

 

Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), has won a seat in the House of Representatives (Lower House) for the next parliament in general elections, according to an announcement from the Union Election Commission (UEC) on Tuesday, Xinhua reported. United States has concerns about Myanmar’s parliamentary elections – Pompeo

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday said the United States has concerns about Myanmar’s parliamentary elections, Reuters reported.

Pompeo was also quoted as saying the elections mark an important step in the country’s democratic transition and the U.S. will continue to closely monitor the process.

Election results of eminent candidates in Shan State

Nan Yamin (SNLD party)

Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) party young candidate Nan Yamin contested in Taunggyi constituency (1), Shan State, was defeated by her strong contender and incumbent Finance Minister of Shan State government from ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party, Soe Nyunt Lwin. Nan Yamin stood in fourth place in vote counting and other candidates from Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and Pa-O National Organization (PNO) stood second and third places respectively.

Maw Tun Aung (SNLD)

Candidate Maw Tun Aung contested the House of Nationalities (upper house) seat from Shan State constituency (5) as SNLD candidate. He represented Muse district and according to current available vote counting results, he won in polling stations from Muse district with a clear margin but he is neck in neck with other candidates from SNDP and TDP parties in Namkham district and USDP is leading with big margin in Kutkai district. In this overall constituency, Maw Tun Aung is leading over other candidates.

Dr. Lin Htut (incumbent CM)

Shan State government Chief Minister Dr. Lin Htut contested in the same constituency, Lashio State Assembly constituency (2) where he also contested in 2015 general elections. Though the voters do not give him full marks for his performance in the government, he got votes from these voters as he

contested for NLD party. According to vote counting in Lashio urban area and absentee vote counts, he is currently leading in the race. The final result may change after the arrival of rural votes to counting centre.

Tun Tun Hein (current House of Representatives Deputy Speaker)

House of Representatives (lower house) deputy speaker Tun Tun Hein contested from Nawngkio constituency in Shan State and he has won with clear margin. His contender activist Aung Kyaw Moe from SNLD party was defeated by him in this constituency.

Nan Kham Aye (SNLD)

SNLD candidate from Namtu constituency in Shan State is also the MP of House of Representatives from the same constituency elected in the last general elections. She is eminent for her powerful parliamentary deliberations and questions in the last term (2015-2020) and now she has won again in 2020 general elections from the same constituency as SNLD candidate. Namtu constituency is dominated by government employees but she won in this constituency comfortably over other rival candidates.

Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won in Ann constituency where the western military region command is stationed by surpassing vote counted over ruling party National League for Democracy (NLD) party and regional ethnic political party, the USDP party spokesman said.

The responsible official from USDP said that their party won in Ann constituency where western military region command is stationed by getting more votes than ruling NLD and the regional ethnic party. USDP won House of Representatives (lower house) seat and regional assembly seat constituency (1) but the party is lagging behind the regional ethnic political party, Arakan National Party (ANP), while vote counting is still underway.

NLD in good position to form government

National League for Democracy (NLD) party Information Committee secretary Monywa Aung Shin said that their party was in good position to form government. According to the information available now, the party was winning in almost all (seven) Regions, he added.
