Survivors of Pazigyi Massacre make merit for dead relatives on the phone

A merit-making ceremony between monks and the relatives of people killed in the Pazigyi Village massacre on the seventh day after their deaths was held over the phone, on 17 April.

The villagers are in hiding having fled their homes after the junta’s 11 April airstrike on Pazigyi Village in Sagaing Region’s Kantbalu Township that killed at least 170 people.

"The Pazigyi villagers are not at their homes anymore and they are now living in the forest. For the merit-making ceremony on 17 April, we were unable to invite the monks into the forest. Therefore, we made merit with them on the phone”, said a local volunteer. Read more: https://bit.ly/3MTC8gE

Amnesty calls for suspension of aviation fuel in wake of Myanmar junta massacre

Amnesty International has called on the international community to suspend the supply of aviation fuel to the Myanmar junta in the wake of the 11 April village massacre in Sagaing.

Responding to reports of deadly air strikes in Sagaing Region’s Kanbulu Township, Amnesty International’s Business and Human Rights Researcher Montse Ferrer said:

“Initial reports on deadly air strikes in Sagaing Region are horrifying. Unlawful air attacks killing and injuring civilians and destroying homes are a trademark of the Myanmar military, which goes to despicable lengths to crush resistance and instill fear in the population. Night strike commemorating Pazigyi Village massacre held in Kanni Township village

A night strike to pay respect to those who died in the 11 April junta airstrike on Pazigyi Village was held in a Kanni Township village in Sagaing Region, on the evening of 15 April.

One of the strike’s leaders, Pyae Aung Naing, told Mizzima that the protesters sang anti-military songs, shouted slogans, prayed for the victims, lit candles for them and released hot air balloons to help give the dead a better existence in their next lives. Protest leaders also gave anti-junta speeches.

The name of the village has been withheld for security reasons.

According to a National Unity Government (NUG) 16 April press release, 168 villagers, including children, were killed in a junta airstrike on Pazigyi Village in Sagaing Region’s Kantabalu Township on 11 April. Since that statement estimates of the number of dead have risen to 170 or 171 people.

NUG issues second situation report on Myanmar junta’s Pazigyi village massacre

The National Unity Government (NUG) has issued a second report on the Myanmar junta’s aerial attack on Pazigyi village in Sagaing Region, saying the death toll, as of 13 April, stands at 168 people including children.
