16 days of talks to prevent violence against women being held on Myanmar-India border

The Kuki Women's Human Rights Organization (KWHRO) held a talk at a Myanmar village in the Myanmar-India border area on 26 November, as part of a 16-day campaign to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The United Nation’s (UN) International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was on 25 November, but it is being supported with 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

These 16 Days of Activism began on 25 November and run through to International Human Rights Day on 10 December.

Led by civil society, the campaign is supported by the United Nations through the Secretary General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women initiative. This year, the UN marks the 16 Days with the theme “UNiTE! Activism to end violence against women and girls”.

The KWHRO will be holding talks and meetings until 10 December as part of the 16 Days of Activism.

Boinu, a KWHRO organiser said to Mizzima: "The aim is to mobilise all of society to become activists for the prevention of violence against women. We want to run an awareness program about the causes of violence and domestic violence.”

Currently, KWHRO helps resolve cases of domestic violence in the Myanmar border areas close to India.
