4.8 magnitude earthquake destroys buildings, kills nun in Maubin delta township

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake has struck Maubin Township, in Ayeyawady Region, killing a nun and injuring a woman buried by debris from a collapsing building.

The quake occurred around 4:20 pm on 7 June, about 5 miles south-southeast of Nyaungdone Township at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology Department.

The US Geological Survey said that the 4.8 magnitude quake was centered near Maubin Township.

A local person in Maubin said, “The earthquake destroyed some buildings in Maubin Township. A nun was killed and a woman injured under the debris in the devastation of building at the Mogyoke Meditation Centre near Shweboinepwint Pagoda.”

The Technology University of Maubin, and Shwebonepwint Pagoda were also damaged.

The jolt also hit other delta townships including Nyaungdone, Bogalay and Pyapon, as well as the Yangon townships of Kamayut, Ahlon, Insein, Hlaingtharyar, Mingaladon and Thanlyin.

A local in Ahlon told Mizzima, “The jolt happened at around 4:25 pm.”

Locals in Yangon also suffered three aftershocks up to 5:40 pm.

On the evening of 31 May evening, a 5.9 magnitude quake occurred centering on Hopin Township, in Kachin State.
