Strong winds destroyed 90 per cent of Taing Nyo Internally Displaced People’s (IDP) Camp in Mrauk-U township after Cyclone Mocha made landfall in Rakhine State on 14 May.

Taing Nyo IDP Camp is located north of Mrauk-U Township in Rakhine State, on the Yangon to Sittwe road. The impact of the storm destroyed most of the IDP’s shelters and water also entered the camp causing flooding.

“Over 90 per cent of Taing Nyo IDP Camp was destroyed. We heard that there have not been any casualties in the camp so far. The cyclone damaged many other IDP camps in Rakhine. Right now, that’s all we can say,” said Ko Khaing Min Shin from the Mrauk-U Natural Disaster Relief Committee.

More than 3,000 IDPs from approximately 10 villages have been sheltering at Taing Nyo IDP Camp since 2018, after being driven from their homes by fighting between the Myanmar Army and the Arakan Army (AA), according to local news sources.
