Two shopping centres filled exclusively with women-owned stores have recently opened in the eastern Afghan city of Herat. The centres are for women shoppers, but exceptions are made for male customers if they visit with women family members. While business owners do not have to pay rent for the first six months, they said sales are low because of the overall economic crisis, as well as various restrictions implemented on women.
