The Kyaukse District Defense Force (KDDF) detonated a bomb at the Biotechnology Research Department compound in Mandalay Region, where junta troops were stationed, at noon on 17 September.

According to locals the junta army might have suffered casualties as a result of the bombing. A local witness said: ““They [the KDDF] threw a bomb and ran away for their safety. I saw one or two junta soldiers fall down after the bomb attack. There were people on the street at that time but luckily no one got hurt.”

On 18 September the KDDF released a statement claiming responsibility for the bombing, it said that they had no information about junta casualties.
