Burmese march in New York to commemorate the ‘8888 uprising’

The Burmese community and supporters took to the streets of New York City in the USA on the weekend to mark the 34th anniversary of the “8888 uprising” against the military dictatorship and to achieve democracy.

In honour of the “8888 Uprising” 34th anniversary, New York Burmese families marched across the 100-year-old Brooklyn Bridge in NYC and joined in a Spring Revolution rally for Burma's liberty and democracy organized by the New York City Burmese Community (NYCBC) on 7 August.

Myanmar political activists and other members of the Burmese community and supporters took to the streets to mark the anniversary of pro-democracy protests in Myanmar that built to a crescendo on 8 August 1988, resulting in heavy loss of life.

The ceremony to commemorate the 34th anniversary was held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. New York time. Members of the 88 generation and Gen Z youth took part and speeches were made calling for the ousting of the military junta that grabbed power in Myanmar in February 2021.
