Bus catches fire in Yangon

A public bus burst into flames near the People’s Park on Pyay Road in Yangon City at about 10:00 a.m. on 16 May.

The bus was a Yangon Bus Service (YBS) number 76 bus.

An eyewitness said: “The fire started in the engine. The passengers on the bus were unharmed.”

The driver and conductor of a passing number 21 YBS bus tried to help extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher, but it was not enough. The fire was only completely extinguished by the fire brigade when they arrived.

Three fire engines attended the fire, one each from Western District Fire Station, Kyauktada Fire Station, and Sanchaung Township Fire Station. According to the Myanmar Fire Service Department, the blaze was extinguished at 10:08 a.m. and they are still investigating the cause of the fire.

According to eyewitnesses the fire completely destroyed the rear of the bus, but there were no serious injuries to passengers.
