China has a "strategic interest" in Russia being seen as victorious in Ukraine, a UK-based analyst says as President Xi Jinping visits Moscow for high-stakes talks with his counterpart Vladimir Putin.

"It seems to me that the Chinese have a strategic interest in Russia being seen to win in Ukraine, partly because it's going to damage the credibility of the US and its allies," Ben Barry of the International Institute for Strategic Studies tells AFP.
