Beijing defends its ban on US semiconductor giant Micron's products as "a necessary measure" to protect national security after its cybersecurity watchdog told operators to stop buying the chipmaker's products in critical infrastructure projects citing "serious potential network security risks".

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning also says "no cooperation should target third parties" in response to the defence pact between Papua New Guinea and the United States.
