China warns that peace in the Taiwan Strait and independence for the island are "mutually exclusive" in its view, as Beijing carries out military drills around the island.

"Taiwan independence and Taiwan Strait peace and stability are mutually exclusive things," said foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin at a regular briefing on Monday.
