China warned Thursday that US military aid to Taiwan harmed the island's "security", after Washington approved direct military assistance to Taipei for the first time, under an assistance program aimed at foreign governments.

"Whether it is aiding Taiwan or selling weapons to Taiwan, we have always firmly opposed it," said Wu Qian, China's defence ministry spokesperson.
