The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) has urged ICRC-Myanmar to assist political prisoners in Insein Prison in the wake of Friday’s prison protests.

International Committee of the Red Cross (Myanmar) was urged to provide the immediate assistance to the requirement of prisoners of conscience in accordance with international ethics.

According to the military council’s announcement, six prisoners are said to have died of COVID-19 in prison.

According to the CRPH, the death toll from the Covid epidemic in the prisons has risen sharply, and some inmates who are in poor health are suffering seriously. It is found that the prison is unable to provide the necessary prevention and cure.

In addition, it is described in the CRPH announcement that the family members of the detainees were not allowed to send food and medicine to the prison. Detainees lost not only the contact with family but also their right to defend themselves in accordance with the law.

Similarly, political activists do not live with human dignity in prison. Water, food, shelter and medical treatment are also in short supply during their unfair detention.

Due to the protest staged in Insein Prison on Friday morning, people in Yangon banged pots and pans and the protest spread to Mandalay's Obo prison.
