Cyclone Mocha floods 20 villages in Magway

After Cyclone Mocha affected various townships in the Magway region, locals say water has poured excessively into rivers and streams causing flash floods from the Chin hills and Rakhine Yoma Mountain Range.

On 14 May, heavy rains and flash flood runoff caused rivers and streams to overflow, flooding at least 20 villages in Salin township of Magway region. Record rainfall was also observed in several townships.

“The amount of rain was unprecedented. In my 20 years of living in Pwint Phyu Township, Magway region, I've never experienced this much rain. All of the remaining sesame fields in Pwint Phyu are flooded, except for a few highland areas. Everything is destroyed by the cyclone,” a local Pwint Phyu resident told Mizzima.

Although it was initially reported that no one had died as a result of the flood in Pwint Phyu Township, the residents of Salin Township's worst-hit area are currently facing difficulties.

“There is no dead here in Pwint Phyu township. We are now heading to Salin where the situation is bad and villages were flooded,” said a local woman from Pwint Phyu.

The villages along the river bank in Salin Township were submerged as the Salin River overflowed.

“We are now heading to Salin but still cannot make it due to the road situation. Now we are in between Saku and Pwint Pyu. Some trees are falling and the road are overflowing. Since the night (14 May), we have also lost communication with our teams from Salin and the details of the situation on the side of the Salin are still unknown,” said a member of KS Rescue Magway in 8:00 am of 15 May.

20 villages, including Kyeethaik, Naungdawgyi, Kanyat, Poungse, Yanbo, Nwetamel, Uyinsu, and Khayakone, are reportedly experiencing floods, according to a report from KS Rescue Magway.

Similar to the above, the majority of the homes in low-lying regions of Sin Phyu Kyun Township are flooded, making life difficult for the locals. Mizzima is still investigating in detail the damage conditions of Salin and Sin Phyu Kyun Townships.

Cyclone Mocha has weakened slightly after passing through Rakhine and Chin State yesterday, as measured by the morning of 15 May.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology predicted at 7:00 am on 15 May that the cyclone would weaken into an inland depression over the next six hours and will move over Sagaing region, Mandalay region, Kachin State, and northern Shan State and weaken as a low pressure when it reaches Kachin State.
