Cyclone warnings for Myanmar’s Chin State and Sagaing Region

A disaster management researcher is warning people in Chin State and Sagaing Region to take care as Cyclone Mocha – dubbed a Super Cyclone - continues to move north from the Bay of Bengal. At present, Cyclone Mocha is classified as a class four hurricane or storm.

In a warning for Chin state, Cyclone Mocha will affect villages in southern Chin State, including Mindat from 8-9pm today. Winds will be 100-150 kph or 100 mph, according to Sonia Leonard, researcher on Climate Change and Disaster Management.

In a warning for Sagaing Region, strong winds up to 60 mph and heavy rain will affect villages including Naga areas from 1 am on 15 May, she adds.

According to assessments by Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS) as much as a quarter of the population of Myanmar, over 16 million people, could be hit by the cyclone and suffer damage.
