Explosion at Pindaya Township Education Office

A mine was detonated at the Pindaya Township Education Office in southern Shan State at around 4:30 am on 9 May by the Urban Task Force PINDAYA (UTF-PDY), according to the group.

Currently, schools in Myanmar are on their long annual holidays following the final exams of the 2020 to 2021 academic year. Normally, schools should re-open in June for the new academic year and the junta Ministry of Education has said that school enrollment for the next academic year will start on 25 May.

The UTF-PDY do not want the schools to re-open, which is why they carried out this attack. They said that the Pindaya Township Education Officer is planning to take enrollments and re-open schools in June and the explosion was a warning to them to not do so.

'Currently, schools are about to reopen. For the time being, we only exploded a landmine, that was not too powerful, as a warning. Later, if they neglect our warning, we will carry out a fatal explosion”, said a representative from the UTF PDY to Mizzima.

The National Unity Government (NUG) has called for parents to not send their children to school as part of the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) against the junta. Instead, the NUG has urged students to study online and it is trying to provide education for students who refuse to attend junta-controlled schools. To this end, it has introduced a home-based learning system that includes a new curriculum and syllabus.

Most students have not been attending school, except those from families with military connections.

The UTF-PDY was formed on 4 May to attack junta government buildings. This was their first attack.

“Our first operation was carried out without any problems", said the UTF-PDY representative.

The UTF-PDY has already informed the public that it will carry out further attacks on junta government buildings in the future.
