Fifty homes damaged by Cyclone Mocha winds in Rakhine’s Gwa Township

In an early account of the damage being caused by Cyclone Mocha, about 50 houses were damaged by heavy rains and strong winds around 6 am in the village of Shwe Oo Kwin in Gwa Township, about 300 kilometers southeast of Sittwe in Rakhine State as the storm hit landfall.

Residents of Gwa Township are currently experiencing strong winds as a result of Cyclone Mocha, which has damaged over 50 houses in Shwe Oo Kwin village.

According to the Humanitarian Aid Association, no injuries were reported, and the majority of residents are currently sheltering in undamaged homes.

According to an official from Gwa Township's Funeral Service Association, there has been no reporting of injuries during the strong winds.

"People were not injured as a result of the strong wind; the people in the village are now safe. However, there are power lines and trees that have been damaged,'' said the official,

Strong winds have caused damage to a number of trees, rooftops, and a few electricity posts in Shwe Oo Kwin village, Gwa township, as well as houses.

Besides, strong winds blew over a telecommunication tower in the Rakhine State capital city of Sittwe at around 12:20 pm as Cyclone Mocha approached the area.

According to the residents, phone lines and fiber internet lines are down in some parts of Rakhine State due to the cyclone.

The Military Council's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reported earlier that the centre of the “Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Mocha" will land this afternoon between Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh and Kyaukphyu in Myanmar near Sittwe.

Cyclone Mocha has winds of up to 218 kilometres per hour (136 miles per hour), according to weather forecasters.
