Five junta soldiers killed in Chindwin River boat attack

Local resistance forces killed five junta soldiers when they attacked junta boats on the Chindwin River in Sagaing Region at around 1:00 p.m. on 19 July.

The attack happened on a stretch of river between Chaing-Ding Pauk Village and Kani Town.

Apparently, the junta boat had come from Alone-Min Daunt port in Monywa.

As well as the five junta soldiers who were killed, one resistance force member was injured in the attack, according to Kyauk Lone Gyi (KLG-PDF).

He said: ''We could see the dead junta soldiers on the boat from the sandbank [where we were]. Both sides shot at each other. They fired back at us with machine guns mounted on the ships. Luckily we did not have any deaths, but five junta troops may have died.''

According to local resistance forces, about 50 junta troops were preparing to launch an offensive against Kani Township in Sagaing Region. This has caused concern to the approximately 2,000 people who live in villages along the Chindwin River in that region. Some have already fled their homes in anticipation of forthcoming violence.
