Grenade attack on Yangon’s Shwe Pyi Thar City Hall

Defence forces launched a grenade attack against the junta troops stationed at Shwe Pyi Thar City Hall in Yangon City’s Shwe Pyi Thar Township at around 6:35 p.m. on 11 September.

Aung Thwan Tun, the commander of the Shwe Pyi Thar Underground Group (SPTUG) that carried out the attack said: “We had waited so long for this attack. They [come out] in the evening to recheck the number of motorcycles they have seized. We detonated the grenade when they came out. The explosion wasn’t very loud, but I think that Military Council troops were wounded. The SPTUG fighters [who carried out the attack] are currently on their way to safety.”

He explained: “The purpose of the attack was to retaliate against the Military Council troops stationed in Shwe Pyi Thar City Hall who were unjustly arresting and torturing innocent civilians and seizing people’s motorcycles every day.”

According to local residents explosions were also heard on the night of 11 September in the Yangon City townships of  Hlaing, Insein and Dagon Seikkan.
