President of Indonesia Joko Widodo made a statement at the ASEAN meeting in Jakarta today calling for an end to the violence in Myanmar and consideration of the interests of the people.

The Indonesian president was hosting a meeting Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) attended by Myanmar junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

The senior general joined Indonesian President Joko Widodo and the Sultan of Brunei, the current chair of ASEAN, as well as leaders and foreign ministers from most of the 10-country group, which also includes Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

The following is the statement of the President of Indonesia Joko Widodo:

“The interest of Myanmar people must always be the top priority. It is imperative that Myanmar military leaders commit to end military violence and at the same time ask all parties in Myanmar to refrain themselves.

An inclusive dialogue process must begin immediately, political prisoners should be immediately released, and a special ASEAN envoy should be formed to encourage dialogue with all parties in Myanmar.”

In addition, he called for “open access to humanitarian assistance coordinated by the Secretary-General of the ASEAN and AHA Center, and Indonesia is committed to overseeing the political crisis to be resolved immediately.”

“We are grateful that what we have delivered in the meeting is in line with other ASEAN leaders. There will be five points of consensus that will be delivered by the ASEAN Secretary-General as soon as possible.”
