To mark Myanmar New Year, 3,015 Prisoners serving sentences in various prisons and detention camps were granted amnesty on 17 April, the ruling Military Council announced on Monday.

According to a Military Council press release, the punishments were commuted with the understanding that those who were pardoned would still have to complete their current sentences in addition to any additional sentences imposed should they repeat the same offence again.

There were 98 foreigners were among those pardoned.

In January, to commemorate Burma Independence Day, around 300 political prisoners were released from at least 19 prisons while the Military Council released more than 7,000 prisoners, according to Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

AAPP report that a total of 2,1348 people were arrested following the coup in 2021 to 12 April, 2023, of which 17,460 are still in detention.

It is unclear whether any of the new batch of released prisoners are political prisoners or not.
