KNU claims over 220 Myanmar Military Council troops killed in 20 days of fighting

In the Karen National Union (KNU) controlled area, 227 military council’s forces were killed during the fights between KNLA and military council’s soldiers combined with BGF troops from 1 February to 20 February, the KNU announced on 24 February.

KNU said that during the 20 days there were about 70 clashes between the troops of KNLA and the Military Council.

During those clashes, another 159 troops of the military council were injured. Five KNLA fighters were killed and 21 injured.

The KNU said in some villages of Thaton, Hpa An and Kyaik Hto townships, due to the artillery strikes of junta troops and BGF’s 1014 brigade, four local people were injured and some houses destroyed.

In Dwe Loh and Lu Thaw townships in KNU Brigade 5 area, junta forces dropped more than seven bombs from the air that killed four civilians and injured more than 14.

The Military Council does not usually make any announcements about the clashes or the casualties of their troops.

After the military coup, intense clashes between the military and KNLA troops started again in KNU-controlled areas and the KNU monthly statistical reports say hundreds of clashes happen every month.

Because of the clashes, there are now more than 20,000 internally displaced persons in KNU’s 5th Brigade and 6th Brigade areas and aid workers and local organizations have called for aid for the displaced.
