Light magnitude 4.9 earthquake felt in Sagaing

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake shook the area near the town of Mawlaik, Sagaing, in Myanmar on Saturday afternoon.

The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Saturday 14 November 2020 at 2.50 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 99 km below the surface, according to EarthQuakeMonitor.

The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.

A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mawlaik (pop. 44,500) located 23 km from the epicenter, and Falam (pop. 5,400) 117 km away, according to the news service.
