Man chased, shot and arrested by junta in Mandalay

Junta troops, some of whom were in civilian clothes shot a man and then arrested him near to the Garden City housing estate on 74th Street in Mandalay.

According to local residents, fifteen junta troops wearing civilian clothes and five other soldiers in uniform tried to stop two men in a car and when they tried to flee they shot and then arrested one of the men, at about 3:30 p.m. on 3 September. The other man escaped.

One resident said to Mizzima: "As two young men were hotly pursued by the Military Council troops, they drove randomly and their car was blocked near the Garden City housing estate. They left their car and ran away on foot. One of them escaped and the other one was arrested after he was shot in his leg.”

Another resident said: “We came out when we heard the sound of gunshots. We don’t know exactly what happened before.”

So far, Mizzima has been unable to find out where the authorities took the detained man.

Junta supporters wrote on social media that the military Intelligence had arrested the men because they were carrying weapons, but Mizzima had been unable to confirm or deny this rumour.
