Moderate quake hits Myanmar’s Kachin State

A moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9, with its epicentre near Indawgyi lake in Mohnyin District of Kachin State, was reported to have taken place on Saturday, 12 February at 1.46 am local time, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicentre. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicentre. It might have been felt as very weak shaking in the Kachin State capital of Mytkyina, which is located 108km from the epicentre.
