Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that his government is working to end ethnic conflict in the country's northeast, that have killed over 150 people since May.

Speaking from New Delhi's imposing Red Fort for his annual Independence Day address, Modi said the conflict had abated and the relative peace in recent days "must continue".

“There was a wave of violence, many people lost their loved ones, dignity of women and daughters was attacked, but for the past few days, there are reports of peace,” he said.
