More than 30 soldiers killed and three officers captured in Sagaing fighting

More than 30 junta soldiers were killed in fighting with People's Defence Forces in Sagaing Region's Kanbalu Township on 23 August.

Two junta captains and a lieutenant from 356 battalion were also taken prisoner.

The fighting took place in an area between the villages of Letkhotepin and Aung Chan Thar between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Captain Yaung Ni of Kanbalu District 2nd Battalion (KB2), one of the defence forces involved in the fighting, said: "We had to retreat when junta aircraft joined in the fighting. We could not confirm how many died. In the heat of battle we were unable to count all the corpses. I think about 30 or 40 junta soldiers died."

The defence forces also seized weapons and ammunition from the junta troops. These included seven MA1, two MA2, seven MA3, and one MA4 rifles, 55 boxes of MA ammunition, 0ne RPG and two RPG rounds, two 60mm mortar shells and some rounds of heavy artillery.
