The Myanma Apex Bank (MAB) in Yamethin, Mandalay Region, was robbed on the afternoon of November 26, residents said.

A Yamethin resident told Mizzima, “I am in downtown Yamethin, and have heard the news of the robbery. My location is close to the bank, so I can observe the situation. Soldiers and police have arrived at the bank. I also see some soldiers and police dispersing into the city. Gunfire was also heard from the area near High School No 1.”

A bank employee told RFA that around 1:20 pm on November 26, two unidentified men robbed the bank of about 120 million Kyat.

A source close to the banking community in Yamethin said, “According to some sources, two people came on a motorcycle. I don’t know whether they had a gun or not. But, many people say they had guns.”

The MAB is located west of the clock tower in downtown Yamethin, on the Yangon-Mandalay express road.

After the incident, junta soldiers were stationed at the nearby Myanma Economic Bank, according to locals.

Some banks, which have been manipulated by the junta, have recently been robbed.

In early November this year, four men armed with guns and a handmade bomb stole more than 53 million Kyat from a branch of CB Bank in Bago Region’s Yedashe Township.
