The junta killed nine people when they burned down more than 2,500 houses across Myanmar in June 2023, according to the National Unity Government (NUG) Fire Service.

Junta soldiers destroyed over 2,500 homes, a school and four religious structures in 79 arson attacks throughout the country in June.

The attacks took place in Kachin and Shan states and Sagaing, Mandalay and Tanintharyi regions, according to the NUG Fire Department.

Six people are reported to have died in junta-set fires in Mandalay during June.

The greatest loss of houses to arson during June was in Sagaing Region.

In Sagaing Region’s Khin U Township the villages of Kanthit, Ywarthit, Kyeeai, Moenat, Yaukthwarai, Myittaw and Yartaw were all torched by the junta in June, according to Khin U Township News.

The arson attacks in those villages caused 3,000 villagers to flee their homes and go live in temporary shelters in the forest, according to a person assisting the displaced villagers.

One of the displaced people said: "Currently, we need food, water and medicine. At the moment we are living in the forest and building temporary shelters. We have no jobs and commodity prices are too high so we are facing a lot of difficulties.”

From May 2021 until May 2023 the Myanmar junta destroyed 70,324 houses throughout Myanmar, according to Data for Myanmar, an independent data-gathering organisation.
