Myanmar junta informer shot dead in Kachin State’s Mohnyin Town

Than Tun Aung (aka) Ah Phu, a prominent informant for the Military Council and leader of the Mohnyin criminal investigation unit in Kachin State, was fatally shot on 4 September at 5 pm.

According to a witness at the scene, the victim, who is also the owner of Min Yar Zar jackets shop and resides in Ahsheysu Ward, Mohnyin Town, was “executed” while riding a motorcycle with his wife on 5th Street in Ahsheysu Ward.

According to Mizzima's investigation, the victim was shot six times in the head and legs, resulting in his immediate death at the incident site.

The Mohnyin K-PDF Battalion issued a statement declaring that Than Tun Aung was eliminated because he was suspected of being an informant for the Military Council, which was causing trouble for the revolutionaries.

"He previously held a position as a journalist with various local news agencies and later established a news and media school on the outskirts of the city. He had connections with influential individuals and maintained a strong rapport with the military as an informant. It was a common sight to see him carrying a short knife and a gun wherever he went. Tragically, he was fatally shot, but fortunately, his wife remained unharmed,” said a witness.

Than Tun Aung is said to have harbored resentment towards people who took part in the public protests against the military dictatorship following the 2021 coup in Mohnyin Town. Additionally, he had received a cautionary message from the revolutionary forces.

He allegedly revealed the hidden location of the student leaders who were seeking refuge from the military forces which led to the brutal suppression of public demonstrations against the military dictatorship in Mohnyin Town. Consequently, several young protest leaders lost their lives, according to a PDF member.
