General Zaw Min Tun, a spokesman for the Myanmar Military Council, said the military council was merely a caretaker government until elections can be held.

Gen. Zaw Min Tun made this remark at a press conference held by the Military Council on Friday afternoon.

"As the name of the caretaker government, it is not a government which take the responsibilities of the state for the long-term," said General Zaw Min Tun.

He said the caretaker government was formed to reduce decentralization and make governing more effective.

He assured that the junta would govern until August 23, 2023 and a multi-party democratic general election would be held after that.

"State responsibilities will be handed over to the party that wins in the multi-party democratic general election in accordance with democratic norms," said General Zaw Min Tun.

The junta announced a reshuffle of the caretaker government on August 1 and coup leader Min Aung Hlaing has taken on the role of prime minister.
