Myanmar Junta says SIM cards must be properly registered

Mizzima

The junta announced that it will take action to prevent the sale of mobile SIM cards that are sold without the user’s personal information being registered, as required by the Telecommunication Law.

In a statement issued on 27 September, the junta said that everyone selling SIM cards is required to register the required information before completing the sale. It said that those who fail to do so will be prosecuted under Section 72 of the Telecommunications Law.

A salesperson from a mobile phone shop in Yangon said: “My perspective on the issue is that every SIM card we sold was already registered. A few customers requested to register with their profiles, and as long as the card is registered and not blocked, it should be acceptable for buyers. My question is, how would the junta take action? The system has not been correct since it started.”

A mobile phone user said: “The statement is intended to target those who are participating in the revolution in different ways. The dictator has historically been unkind to both civilians and the country. The Junta used to block unregistered SIM cards. Before, some SIMs were blocked. If a SIM is blocked, we buy another one. If they want us to register, then we refuse to register. We are against their orders.”
