Myanmar NGOs, CSOs and students are calling on the world community to intervene to save the lives of seven students from Dagon University who have been sentenced to death.

The call was made on 10 December when the world marks International Human Rights Day.

The following is the appeal made through representatives of Dagon University:

Since the military coup in February 2021, we, the students of Myanmar, have organized and participated in numerous anti-dictatorship movements. The citizens and students have suffered several violations of human rights committed by the military junta on a daily basis starting after February 1, 2021. The daily lives of youths are no longer safe because of the military arbitrary accusing and detaining and merciless killing.

On July 25th 2022, the military propaganda media have announced that the SAC has executed Ko Kyaw Min Yu (aka) Ko Jimmy, Ko Phyoe Zeyar Thaw, Ko Hla Myo Aung and Ko Aung Thura Zaw. Similarly, among the students arbitrarily detained by the military Ko Khant Zin Win, Ko Thura Maung Maung, Ko Zaw Lin Naing, Ko Thiha Htet Zaw, Ko Hein Htet, Ko Thet Paing Oo and Ko Khant Lin Maung Maung were sentenced to the death penalty

The death penalty is against the right to life. As the international community is strongly condemning the death penalty there has been bans on certain countries. As our citizens face violation of their human rights since the military coup we would like the global media to shed light on this matter and also urge for help to global citizens, international organizations and human rights NGOs/ CSOs regarding the death penalty sentence has been given to seven students from Dagon University, Myanmar.
