Myanmar students back to school in politically-charged environment

Primary and secondary school students go back to school in Myanmar's capital of Naypyidaw as they begin a new school year on Thursday, trooping into classrooms that have become the latest battleground in the polarised country, with the junta desperate to project normalcy and opponents demanding teachers, students and parents stay away. The junta had insisted schools open last year followed the February ouster of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi after a year's absence due to Covid-19, but many students and teachers boycotted it in 2021.
