National League for Democracy’s MP sentenced to two years in prison

Maung Maung Swe, the National League for Democracy (NLD) MP was sentenced to two years in prison by the Pobbathiri Township Court in Nay Pyi Taw on 23 March under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code, according to sources close to the court.

Maung Maung Swe was arrested by the military junta on charges of inciting civil servants to join the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).

He was arrested, along with his wife, by military junta troops on 28 March, 2021 in Pyin Oo Lwin.

Maung Maung Swe, an MP of the Upper House, was charged and sentenced under Section 505 (a) and Section 171 (f) and Section 168 of the Penal Code.

The NLD announced on 18 March this year that 832 NLD members have been arrested since the military coup, and that 645 party members, including the party chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi, are still being detained.

A total of 16 party members, including a member of parliament, have been killed during interrogations or because of inadequate medical care in prison, according to a party statement.
