NLD representative’s 10-year-old daughter and wife arrested

Six people, including the 10-year-old daughter and the wife of the National League for Democracy (NLD) regional Hluttaw representative, Thet Paing Soe, were arrested in a Nyin Chaung Village, on HaiGyi Island, in Ayeyarwady Region’s Nge Puthaw Township, according to local residents.

Thet Paing Soe said: “On 23 April at around 12:00 p.m, my wife and daughter were arrested while they were hiding my aunt’s house in Ka Nyin Chaung Village. The Military Council arrested four family members and two other local residents.”

He explained: “I am on the run so I left my wife and daughter at my aunt’s house. My aunt’s husband and her 13-year-old daughter were also taken into custody. Only my aunt, who is mute, and my 85- year-old uncle were left at home. The rest of my family members were detained. It is totally unacceptable that junta troops are randomly arresting innocent people.”

Previously, on the evening of 19 April, Zaw Htun, a military-appointed village administrator, had been shot and killed in nearby Nga Pye Ma Village in HaiGyi Township. Following his killing junta
soldiers and police began randomly arresting people in the surrounding area, according to a local resident.

Thet Paing Soe said: “The military council and police are now interrogating the detainees at Hai Gyi Island Police Station. I have not had any contact with my family members yet.”
