NUG announces five deaths from Cyclone Mocha

The National Unity Government (NUG) has announced that there have been five deaths in Rakhine State, Shan State, Mandalay and Ayeyarwaddy regions as a result of Cyclone Mocha.

Three men were killed by falling trees. One each in Taung Gup Township, Rakhine State; Yay Kyi Township, Ayeyarwaddy Region and Pyin Oo Lwin Township, Mandalay Region.

A husband and wife in Sansaing Ward in Tachileik City, eastern Shan State were killed when a landslide caused by persistent rain hit their house at 3:00 a.m. whilst they were sleeping.

Cyclone Mocha hit the Rakhine coast near Sittwe Town at 11:30 am on 14 May, with wind speeds of 130 miles per hour.

The NUG has issued warnings saying that in the 24 hours after Cyclone Mocha hit land in Rakhine State there may be storm surges in Rakhine State; landslides in Chin State due to heavy rain; and lightning and thunderstorms in Bago, Yangon and Ayeyarwady regions.

Many displaced people who have had to flee from Kanni Township in Sagaing Region because junta forces entered the area are suffering from health problems because it has been raining constantly for the last three days.

In Gangaw Township, in Magway Region the electricity and internet have been cut by the storm and IDPs are facing difficulties in accessing information, according to the NUG.

The NUG said it will release more information about the casualties and damage caused by Cyclone Mocha as it becomes available.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology warned that Cyclone Mocha may hit Chin State and Magwe Region on the night of 14 May.
